30 Day Film Challenge: Day 6: A Film That Reminds You of Somewhere

Day 6: A Film That Reminds You of Somewhere: Wonder Boys

Yes, Wonder Boys is set on campus.  Yes, it's about writers and readers and various academic literati.  Yes, it's about events that transpire during a literary festival.  Yes, I obviously associate Wonder Boys with my own time spent moping around campus, lurking in the English department, attending readings, and workshopping, workshopping, workshopping.  While I haven't met an abundance of them, I'm sure this film holds a special place in the hearts of many a fiction-focused former student from many a small liberal arts college.  I'm also sure that if any of my former professors are reading this right now, they're probably rolling their eyes a little bit and praying I don't decide to get weird and compare them to Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas).  Nah, have no fear, good sirs and ladies, you're safe.  My Wonder Boys love is partially in the abstract.  In many ways, the film feels much like my college experience, and yet, if we picked apart the plot, subplot, and characters, there would be little direct correlation.  I don't know anyone who shot a dog, for instance.  Still, somehow, it's all there: the presence is in the absence, and vice versa.  Whatever the reason may be, each repeat recalls tiny instances, people, and conversations.  It may be a comedy (and a pretty good one, at that), but when I watch it I mostly mourn for all the time I used to have to devote solely to just writing.   Oh, and not to ruin the mood or anything....but if I were to choose a movie that reminded me of campus as a whole?  That would be Rules of Attraction.  When I say a lot of those people lived in my dorm, I'm not kidding.  Luckily, situations were never quite as dire.
