30 Day Film Challenge: Day 4: A Film You Watch to Feel Down

Day 4: A Film You Watch to Feel Down:  Hiroshima Mon Amour

While I wouldn't claim to watch Alain Resnais's 1959 nuclear elegy Hiroshima Mon Amour explicitly to 'feel down', there's no question it's the most out and out depressing of the films I've fallen in love with.  Originally intended as a sort of memorializing documentary on the horrors of the atomic bomb, this New Wave masterwork instead became a tale of love amongst the ruins, to put it simply, chronicling a doomed affair between a French actress and a Japanese architect (and penned by Marguerite Duras!).  As our screen lovers interact in post-war Japan, each recalls past memories and uses the other as a sounding board for their secrets and pain.  It's beautiful, I swear, not to mention oddly hypnotic.  But, as you might imagine, fallout isn't much of an upper.
